Contested Sacred Space
Following a famous speech delivered on 1095 by Pope Urban II, thousands of men left Europe to free Jerusalem from the rule of Muslims, and re-design it as a Christian pilgrimage center. Less than a century later, it was captured by the Muslim hero Saladin, and re-made into a Muslim city. Prof. Talmon-Heller's lecture will present the struggle for rule and hegemony in medieval Jerusalem, through the perspectives of Christians, Muslims and Jews.
